Australia's captain Set to Play a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has taken 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches set to start on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the prospects of being involved.

"We're aware that time is getting short and various factors at play, not only the physical problem, but further aspects," he commented.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he will feature a major part. Hopefully it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons leading to absences from several home seasons in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to make the squad for the series.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but admitted it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the opener.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the national team for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and mentioned that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the first Test as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches in any case. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for another day, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
