Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That

Whenever a major prize-giving event draws close, you'll find a clamor for introducing of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and delight the spirits of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer made the case for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent above others. This is the request: There should be a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of video games, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, and you can find room for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely during that awards season
  • Another creative title received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked recently
  • Only a few logic titles barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often modest productions, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as the most-played games globally maintaining this status for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals famous sandbox experiences for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification in important events. Logic title developers operate at the challenging frontier game development, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay decades.
