Users Stopping Slimming Jabs Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who come off new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a major medical journal points out that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People buying such drugs should be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a reversion to original weight in about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The research, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Doctors believe the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

Users who have stopped the medication report a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a switch activating and you're instantly starving," said an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is higher among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
